We work closely with school leaders to place trained chaplains within their own teams, shaping each partnership around the school's needs, the chaplain's gifts, and support from the wider Bridge team. Gay had children at South Wilts Grammar School and became increasingly aware that there was little support for Christian young people, or for those beginning to explore faith, across the city and within local schools. She also saw a lack of connection between young people from different churches and communities. With that concern on her heart, Gay began speaking with local churches about the possibility of appointing a youth worker who could help meet some of these needs. There were obstacles along the way, and not everyone was immediately convinced, but Gay’s perseverance, alongside the support of a faithful group of local people from different churches, helped turn the vision into reality. With the support of Churches Together in Salisbury, The Bridge was founded as an independent registered charity at the beginning of 1994. One highlight was Megamix, a 90s-style event bringing young people from across the city together for music, fun, faith and friendship. Many still speak warmly of the impact it had on their journey of faith and belonging. Alongside this, The Bridge began visiting local secondary schools through occasional assemblies, workshops and sessions, music, demonstrations, games, creative activities, thought-provoking input, simply going in, delivering something meaningful, and building trust with pupils and staff. Over time, The Bridge appointed paid workers to lead both primary and secondary school work, backed by a committed volunteer team. The 2000s became a season of deep growth. In primary schools, The Bridge built a strong menu of resources supporting: RE and collective worship Emotional literacy, self-esteem and confidence Social skills Key programmes like Celebration of Change (a Year 6 transition event), Sounds of Easter and Colours of Christmas became fixtures in local primary schools, and The Bridge became a trusted contributor to RE and school spiritual life across the Salisbury area. This was a significant turning point. Rather than visiting to deliver sessions and leave, chaplaincy let The Bridge become rooted in school life, with chaplains known and trusted by pupils and staff over time. The Bridge was based for many years at Avon Valley College in Durrington, before later settling at Pembroke Park Primary School in Salisbury, a community school where we also have a chaplain. Alongside our usual lessons, assemblies and events, we explored something new: what if a school had its own chaplain, not just a visitor, but a regular part of the community? The impact was clear fast. Chaplains could support children, staff and families more deeply and consistently, respond to each school's unique context, and walk alongside people through change and difficulty, creating space for wellbeing, belonging and hope. By 2024, we had chaplains in 27 schools across Wiltshire and north Dorset, spanning primary, secondary, community, church and independent settings. With years of experience in school chaplaincy, we want to deepen that work locally and help others develop similar chaplaincy in their own contexts. Our heart is to equip others to place chaplains in their local schools. For The Bridge Project to be locally rooted but influence widely! We have also launched Third Space, a community-based youth work initiative creating welcoming spaces for young people beyond the school gate. It's about gathering young people across the city, supporting those exploring faith, and building belonging and hope among young Christians. We look ahead with gratitude for the past and hope for what's next. On 6th July 2022, John resigned from Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Government, having finalised four and a half years' work on a post-Brexit framework for financial services. John was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in October 2022 by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and attended Cabinet. John became the Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office in the November 2023 reshuffle, and continued in this role until the General Election in July 2024. During this time he delivered the infected blood compensation scheme. John is passionate about education, young people and is a committed Christian; so we are delighted to have John on board as the Bridge Youth Project's first ever patron. A Mentor spends typiccally 30-45 minutes with a child in a Primary School as local to you as possible, working alongside a Bridge Chaplain. You will be trained to deliver an 8-10 week programme using our resource, My Happy Place, written specifically for mentoring sessions. At the heart of it is the relationship between Mentor and mentee. No, the "My Happy Place" resource has no religious content and you do not need to be a Christian to deliver it. It's open to children in Year 5 and 6, of any faith or none, and is used in both Church and Community Schools. It fits the gap for children who feel anxious, worried or overwhelmed, and would benefit from someone listening, cheering them on, and offering tools and strategies to help them experience life in all its fullness. Some churches already have strong ties to their local school. Others want to serve young people but aren't sure where to begin. The Bridge Project can help either way. Where a relationship already exists and a Bridge Chaplain is in the school, we'd love to work together to strengthen what is already happening, adding capacity, and supporting collaboration between church, school and community. That might mean mentoring, collective worship, community events, parent support, after school clubs, food bank links, pupil leadership or transition support, shaped around what the school needs. Where there is no active relationship yet, our chaplains can help create natural, trusted points of connection. Because they are already part of school life, they are well placed to listen, build trust and explore where partnership could grow. Through school chaplaincy, we meet young people open to questions of faith, identity and belonging. Many have no church connection and are looking for a safe place to belong and explore life's big questions. Third Space creates welcoming spaces beyond school where young people can gather, be known and encounter Christian community naturally. It's invitational, not pressured, giving young people room to: Belong and build friendships Ask honest questions Take next steps at their own pace Through worship nights, youth gatherings and shared events, it also helps young Christians across the city grow in confidence and faith, and see themselves as part of something bigger than their own school or church. We support the supporters too. Our Youth Hub brings youth leaders, volunteers and churches together for encouragement, shared learning and prayerful collaboration, because youth ministry can feel isolating and leaders need community as much as young people do. Third Space doesn't replace local church youth ministry. Sometimes, they need a safe person who has time to listen. Schools are working hard to support pupils, but teachers and pastoral teams are under significant pressure. A mentor usually meets individually with a child for approximately 30–45 minutes each week. Together, they work through age-appropriate activities and conversations that help the child to: recognise and talk about their feelings; understand worries and anxious thoughts; identify trusted people and sources of support; discover calming and coping strategies; recognise their strengths; build confidence and resilience; approach change and challenges more positively. The activities provide a helpful structure, but the most important part of mentoring is the relationship. Behind every deployment, move and period of uncertainty are young people carrying pride, worry, fear and resilience. In some Service communities, up to 30% of pupils come from Army families. Many are currently preparing for months apart from a parent deployed overseas. For these children, a school chaplain is not an add-on. They can be a lifeline. A chaplain offers a consistent, trusted presence: someone who notices changes, listens without judgement and understands the particular challenges of military life. This can be especially important for children who experience repeated moves, transitions and goodbyes. One-to-one mentoring and bereavement support give children a safe place to express feelings they may struggle to share at home, particularly when the parent who remains is also carrying the pressures of deployment. This quiet, dependable support helps children feel secure, valued and understood. It strengthens families, reassures parents and protects the wellbeing of children who serve alongside their loved ones. She experienced anxiety, low self-esteem and periods of self-doubt, often becoming caught in overthinking. Throughout Year 13, C met weekly with her school chaplain. These sessions did not aim to provide easy answers. Instead, they offered a safe, non-judgemental place where she could speak openly about her worries, relationships, emotions and hopes for the future. Together, they explored friendship, confidence, anger, purpose and personal values. C identified love, kindness, growth, success and patience as important to her. She also recognised that although she readily showed patience to others, she found it much harder to extend that same grace to herself. There were times when C struggled with low mood, poor sleep and eating in school. Alongside professional support, chaplaincy gave her a consistent place to be heard and reminded her that she did not have to carry everything alone. The sessions also made room for laughter, gratitude and hope. C spoke often about her ambition to become a flight attendant and gradually grew more confident in advocating for herself and asking for support. By their final meeting, she felt calmer about her exams and more hopeful about life beyond school. As a young person seeking asylum in the UK, he was living with significant uncertainty and family instability. He found it difficult to trust adults, express his emotions, make decisions and form friendships. A consistent weekly mentoring session became an important anchor. Through patient listening, clear boundaries and predictable support, trust began to grow. The sessions helped A recognise and name his emotions, understand his triggers and feel less overwhelmed. Fitness activities also gave him structure, routine and a growing sense of achievement. Joining a school football group became a particularly important part of his journey. Football provided a natural way to connect with other pupils, practise teamwork and experience a sense of belonging without the pressure of having to explain everything he had been through. Over time, A became calmer, more focused and increasingly able to express himself. His confidence improved, he began taking pride in his physical progress and he started using sport to build friendships rather than withdrawing from others. A continues to face uncertainty, and consistent support remains essential. However, his progress shows the difference a stable adult relationship can make.
