What is Bridge chaplaincy?

Bridge chaplaincy is a trusted, relational presence in school life. It means showing up consistently, listening well, and walking alongside children, young people, staff and families with care and hope.

We sometimes describe it as going at "three miles an hour": valuing people over urgency, presence over performance. School chaplains are available and interruptible, the person who notices, listens and makes time, especially when things are difficult, uncertain or in transition.

Rooted in Christian faith, hope and love, Bridge chaplaincy serves people of all faiths and none, offering pastoral and spiritual support that's professional, inclusive and sensitive to each school's life.

What does Bridge chaplaincy look like in schools?

Chaplaincy is shaped around each school's needs, rhythm and culture. Bridge Chaplains become part of the school community, not occasional visitors more like an available, interruptible presence who notices, listens and makes time.

This can include:

  • Supporting pupils through difficult moments

  • Encouraging staff

  • Parent workshops

  • Helping create reflective spaces

  • Contributing to collective worship or RE

  • Supporting the school's ethos and values

  • Nurturing spiritual development appropriately for the setting

Chaplaincy also offers a calm, steady presence during transition, grief or crisis - a value that becomes especially clear when serious incidents or community challenges arise.

  • We listen well and offer pastoral support to pupils, staff and sometimes families.

  • We help create space for reflection, spirituality, meaning and hope.

  • We contribute to school life through assemblies, reflection, RE input and key events where appropriate.

  • We support wellbeing by offering a calm, trusted and consistent presence.

  • We work within professional boundaries, safeguarding processes and the values of each school.

  • We build bridges between schools, churches and the wider community where this is helpful.

Why does Bridge chaplaincy matter?

Schools are busy, complex places. Children and young people are growing up in a world that can feel pressured, fragmented and uncertain, and staff are carrying significant pastoral and emotional demands. Chaplaincy offers something distinctive: time, presence and relationship. It helps people feel seen, known and valued. It strengthens wellbeing, supports spiritual development and contributes to a culture of care across the school community.

How can your school work with The Bridge Project?

Bridge chaplaincy is developed in partnership with each school. We work relationally and professionally, taking time to understand the context, needs and hopes of the setting. Together, we shape a chaplaincy presence that fits the school well and supports its ethos, wellbeing priorities and safeguarding culture. Our aim is not to offer a one-size-fits-all model, but a thoughtful and sustainable partnership that serves the whole school community.

Could Bridge chaplaincy support your school?

We would love to hear from schools exploring chaplaincy for their community. Looking for a trusted pastoral presence, support for wellbeing and spirituality, or a stronger bridge between school and community? We would be delighted to start the conversation, whether you're ready to explore a chaplaincy model or just want to find out more.
